What is inside favicon.ico?

The .ico contains 16, 32 and 48 px images stored as PNG, which all current browsers support.

Do I still need favicon.ico?

Modern browsers use the PNG or SVG links, but some tools and old browsers still request /favicon.ico from the site root, so including it avoids 404 errors.
